Colby
Colby is eleven and a 5th grader at Barcelona Hills. He is in the same special day class as Jayden. They fight like cats and dogs in there but the teacher doesn't seem to mind. There are no other SDC's in the area, so we deal with it. Coco is number 7 in the family. He is middle child in every way. He fights with the big kids and the little kids. He is a pot stirrer. Colby loves drama and finds it or causes it often.
He is BFF's with Jace. He is right about the same maturity level as a 1st grader so it works great for now. The older Colby gets, the more we see his delays. Looking at him you would never know, but have one conversation with him and you will understand what I mean. He is always off topic.
Coco is afraid of personal drama. He can sit for hours watching Pirates of the Caribbean or Avatar, or Star Wars, but a real life drama unfolding on the screen sends him into hysterics. Like Ferris Bueller or Cheaper by the Dozen, if we even have them on, he cries for hours and hides in the basement.
Colby is also afraid of being scared. He is overly emotional and hasn't figured out how to handle it.
Colby loves his birth story and his adoption story. You can read about those here. He is proud to be from Chicago and we have promised to take him to that glorious city to visit. But, first we have to make sure he can handle the emotional drama that the visit may cause him.
Colby is a softy. The past two birthdays we have taken him to a steakhouse in Laguna Hills. Both times, we have passed a homeless person on the street, and both times, he has rolled down his window and handed them some of his birthday money. Both times, I have been the overly emotional one.
Coco loves sports. He loves to play soccer and excels at it. He is fast and furious. The only physical limitation Colby has, secondary to his prematurity, is weakness in his hands. He can't grip a ball, or hold on tight. He terrifies me on the swings, because he can't hold the chain. He works on strengthening them, but I have never seen any remarkable improvement. I am thrilled the sport he loves the most doesn't require his hands at all.
Colby is a challenge at times, but what kid isn't? I am loving watching him grow and progress in so many ways. Not too many "one pound" babies have the quality of life that Coco enjoys. We are beyond grateful for him.
