Pickle’s rite of passage

Posted by Sandi in Pickle

After Sunday’s hair-do I threw in the towel and vowed to never do her hair again.  She is getting bigger and stronger by the day and she damn near knocks me cold when she throws her head around.  I called Pauline and begged her to do braids in Pickle’s hair.

I look a little rough around the edge’s here. Pickle’s beating the shit out of me and there isn’t a damn thing I can do about it.  I have endured a hell of a lot at this point and begged a stranger to grab my camera and document the progress.  I have donut glaze in my eyebrows, skittle spit sticking my fingers together, and Hawaiian punch dripping down my cleavage.

We are mere seconds away from adding sour cream and cheddar ruffles to the mix.

I filled her little face full of as much as it could hold.  It muffled the screams and gave her something else to think about besides hitting and head butting me.  I allowed her to wash it down with my diet coke.  I was a nice mommy today.

This is it.  The final step.  The hard stuff has all been done. Pauline is just rolling the ends of her hair and dipping it in hot water so it curls.  But Pickle has HIT THE WALL!  She is damn tired of being in this place.  Five hours is too long for anybody to sit still.

As soon as I got off the chair to take her picture, she got off the chair to run out the door.

But look how adorable.  It was worth every minute of HELL we both endured. And when Sunday rolls around and I don’t have to do her hair….Priceless.

She is shirtless because her clothes looked worse than mine at the end of the day.

I have chased her around the front yard for fifteen minutes attempting to get one decent picture. At this point, I have 83 bad ones.

She doesn’t care about my endeavors whatsoever. But man…. if she isn’t the cutest thing I have ever seen.

first..Pauline is beautiful!!! Have you seen Chris Rocks docu on hair? I have only seen a little bit but I have a feeling you need to. Pickle looks so different…How long will it stay in?

  2. Kathy K says:

She is the sweetest Pickle EVER!!! Just makes me want to fly to SoCal to steal a hug: skittle goo, sour cream and cheddar ruffles and all! She looks just beautiful and you are a very brave, strong mommy for enduring the battle. I will never again complain about how long it takes to get my hair colored, because it is no where near five hours!

  3. Sandi says:

Pauline is gorgeous. I love her! She is from Kenya. I haven’t seen Chris Rocks hair show, sounds interesting. Pickle’s hair-do should last 6-8 weeks. Praise Jesus! She looks like a little lady. She knows she looks gorgeous, she walks around and signs “beautiful” to everyone that looks at her. She is asking for compliments.

  4. Lisa says:

She has made my evening! How do you do it? With homework, illness, newborn demands, toddler demands, house responsibilities, etc… you must run out of gas. Please share your secrets – maybe you could write a book in all your spare time lol! Seriously, the mothers of the world are waiting for your recipe! So add famous author to your to-do list!

  5. Tauni says:

Her hair is gorgeous!!!! Tell her she is gorgeous for me!!!

  6. Missy says:

Is that all her hair…If so, I did not know that child had that much hair. YES its beautiful, I want mine like that now. God love ya for even attempting 5 hours in a beauty shop..I would need some major valium!!! ahhaha…Can I just borrow Pickle for a week…every post about her makes me laugh, and laugh and laugh…I love your family!

  7. Olivia says:

Oh wow! She looks like such a big girl!! The curls suit her just fine :)
You’re a brave mommy!! And you just look too cute in that first shot, donut glaze and all ;D

  8. Oh Sandi– I was reading this and thinking you were CRAZY to go through all of that– Then I read your comment saying it lasted for 6-8 weeks. And then I got to the part where Pickle signs “beautiful” and I burst into tears. NOW, I get it and so does sweet Pickle! And you totally ROCK! It really was a coming of age day for her and her self-esteem and confidence.
    :-) ))))

  12. Tracy Davis says:

Oh my gosh she looks gorgeous!! I love it!!! That is so sweet that she is taking pride in her new ‘do!!

  13. Heather P. says:

She is so cute!! I swear I have enough hair issues I don’t think I could deal with having african hair. You know I had black friends growing up and I had no idea they had to go through such ordeals with their hair, until I watched that show on WE about the hairstylist family.

  14. Jet says:

Aww, that is so sweet about her signing “beautiful”. She DOES look beautiful.

  15. just taff says:

it’s wonderful sandi. is that all pickle’s hair or does she have extensions?

she really is a gorgeous little thing. her hair is a work of art. pauline is very talented. does pickle normally have you do it? i’ve read that the two older girls go to the hairdresser for their braids/plaits. hair fascinates me at the moment.

my three year old complains about the TWO hair elastics i put in her hair every morning. i cannot imagine sitting still for 5 hours. i’d have to give her hash coookies or something.

and our littlest one is also called pickle. it’s a great nickname.

    kisses for all..

  16. Momcat says:

I’m surprised you could still smile after going through all that abuse! Well done.

  17. Kerrie says:

Oh Sandi, Brylee looks just stunning with her “do”. It makes her look so much older and not like “Pickle” at all. I had no idea her hair was as long as it is and think that she you all did a stunning job in putting in the five hours it took to do.

Does she respond to Brylee Sandi..?? Does your family use both names when addressing her..??

Give the grown-up girl a big hug and smooch for me, am sending her a beautiful sign too, for she is, she’s so gorgeous.

  18. Jessi says:

wow! I had no clue her hair was that long! She looks gorgeous with her braids! It makes her look a little bit older too!

  19. Jocochica says:

Looooove it, she’s such a cutie, hopefully each trip will get a little easier :)

  20. Joy says:

Sandi your blog always brings tears to my eyes! She does look beautiful, but god bless both of you – I don’t think I could sit still for five hours straight to have my hair worked on so kudos for Pickle for getting through it! I wonder if next time will be easier?

  21. HappyCampers says:

I LOVE it! I am so impressed that the ‘do was completed. Five hours (especially for Pickle) is an extreme challenge it looked like…so way to go Pickle for letting it be finished! And way to go Sandi for enduring the physical & emotional battle ;)

Maybe (maybe?) next time she has to get her hair done she’ll realize that it makes her feel beautiful & will cooperate a little more? Maybe? Wishful thinking?

I love, love, love the braids and it really does make Pickle look like a totally different girl. Thanks for sharing!

  22. Akilah Sakai says:

Braiding takes long but the benefit of how long it lasts is where the true worth is. She is adorable!

  23. Katie says:

Why do you call her Pickle?

  24. Jayme says:

You have got to have more patience than anyone will ever know! She is a BEAUTIFUL holy terror & I bet the hairdo lasts 3-4 weeks! Enjoy it!

  25. gina says:

Valium’s not a bad idea… I needed it when I tried to get permanent eye liner – still didn’t work, thus no permanent eye liner. Salons can be scary places!! Wish I’d had a Mom there to hold me down to endure the pain.

Do they make baby valium in orange flavored drops?

Ooooh- but I think you are right… it was worth the pain!! Just look at how adorable she is with braids. You are such a good Mom. I think mine would all have had buzz cuts by now!

  26. elenka says:

That Pickle kid….she is soooooo lucky to have you as her mom!
She is really turning into a stunner.
I have a relative that has a son that can be wild physically, and there isn’t anything they can really do. He had brain damage at birth. He’s 16 now and it’s getting harder to control him simply because he’s that much bigger and stronger. You don’t seem to be afraid of anything that comes down the Pike, Sandi.

  27. Sandi says:

    answering a few questions-

Pauline braids hair into Pickle’s hair. Her actual hair is about shoulder length. The extra hair helps the do lasts longer.

Pickle/Brylee knows both names and responds to neither. Unless we are asking her if she wants a treat or something. :)

The big kids all call her Brylee, as does the classroom. The rest of us call her both. I call her Pickle unless she is in trouble and then Brylee Elizabeth it is.

  28. Rachael says:

Pickle has Princess hair! I love it!!

  29. Debbie says:

OMY goodness she is soooooooo sweet with the NEW do….she looks so much older! Sunday will come and go and you won’t have to fight with her hair…what a gift! She seems to be doing a great job leaving it alone..so here is hoping 8 WEEKS………

  30. Susan says:

Gawd I love that kid. You’re okay, too.

  31. McCall says:

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY INSANE!!!Those hairdo’s are bad enough with Kate and Jazz. She looks so beautiful though!

  32. Kimmy says:

She’s so damn gorgeous and I’m so pleased that she feels beautiful too. Aww.

  33. Maura says:

She is so adorable!! I was wondering if she was going to start signing ” Beautiful” like the last time when she was so happy with her dress that you got her. What a cutie pie. Love to all your family from La Belle France!

  34. Kate says:

Pickle looks amazing – like such a grown up little girl! I think that it is so awesome that she feels so beautiful :)

  35. CraezieLady says:

Pickle has the most expressive face! She’s adorable! I love this post!

  36. Louise says:

I didn’t realise just how long Pickle’s hair is. She looks far more grown up with her new doo
